QE Meadows Agroecology Presentation

One of our Queen Elizabeth Meadows Garden members, Ollie, recently presented on their incredible experience attending an Agroecology Field School Program in Brazil. Shout out to Kwantlen Polytechnic University for making this opportunity possible!

Ollie spent two weeks living and learning with the Teia dos Povos community at the Assentamento Terra Vista settlement in Bahia, Brazil.

The presentation covered Indigenous history, impacts of Portuguese colonization and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, and the Landless Workers Movement (MST). They also explored agroecology as a global movement, including the similarities between Canadian and Brazilian agriculture.

Ollie brought us 100% cacao nibs straight from the Terra Vista settlement to try, as well as other goods from the community, like an aloe vera salve made by a local all-women’s group.

Thank you, Ollie, for bringing these stories, lessons, and connections back to our community garden here in Surrey, BC. It’s a powerful reminder of how food systems, land rights, and agriculture connect us all across the world!
